Data and Properties

Pure lithium chloride exists as a white, crystalline, highly hygroscopic, strongly salty-tasting, usually powdery solid that slowly melts under the influence of moisture. The chemical crystallizes from water in the form of crystalline hydrates such as monohydrate (CAS 16712-20-2), tri- and pentahydrate. The anhydrous salt is made by heating the hydrates.
